New strategy for the development of scientific research in Poland

We are pleased to announce that the experts of the Polish Academy of Sciences, led by Chairman Professor Marek Figlerowicz, have prepared a proposal for a new long-term strategy for the development of scientific research in Poland.

The document diagnoses the current crisis of the science system and defines five pillars, each of which responds to an important problem and includes specific recommendations. The goal of the strategy is to build an effective, transparent and pro-quality model to support Poland’s economic, social and cultural development.

The five pillars of necessary change are:

1. Expert-based evaluation

2. A transparent financing system

3. Systemic commercialization

4. The social role of universities

5. Reduction of bureaucracy

The authors of the document point out that the system of science in Poland needs a thorough overhaul, not just a correction of the current system. It is important to create mechanisms that foster cooperation and strengthen local research centers, thanks to the inclusion of local governments in the process of financing them. The development of science is not only a matter of innovation and the economy – it is also a matter of culture, democracy and Poland’s international position. The proposed strategy is an invitation to a debate on this issue and a call for decisive action to make science the real foundation of a strong and modern state.
