The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences is one of the leading scientific units in Poland. Its exceptionality across Europe and even the whole world is proven by multi-faceted activities at the interface of three sciences: chemistry, biology and informatics. It is a place where interdisciplinary studies encompassing such fields as bioorganic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, systems biology, synthetic biology and bioinformatics are conducted; and in particular – research on the synthesis, structure and function of nucleic acids, and proteins along with their components, as well as their mutual interactions in model and cellular conditions. The Institute's history dates back to 1969 when the Department of Stereochemistry of Natural Products within the Institute of Organic Chemistry, PAS was established. Subsequently in 1980, it was transformed into an independent Department of Bioorganic Chemistry, PAS and finally in 1988, reorganized into the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, PAS. The Institute currently hires over 700 employees, of which approx. half work in the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center affiliated with IBCH PAS. Scientific studies in the biological and chemical labs are carried out by about 129 scientists, among them 13 full professors and 36 associated professors, supported by about 86 engineering and technical employees. The Institute's PhD Program and the Poznań Doctoral School of the Institutes of PAS educate ca. 80 PhD students preparing their theses in the Institute. The Institute is authorized to confer PhD and DSc (habilitation) degrees in chemistry within chemical and biological sciences. IBCH PAS is comprised of 32 research departments, supported by 13 specialized laboratories offering high-class infrastructure. Other significant components within the Institute's framework are the PAS Center for Science, Scientific Publishers and the Library. Moreover, jointly with the Institute of Computing Science, Poznan University of Technology, the Institute created the European Center for Bioinformatics and Genomics, which is a unique initiative in our country.
This year we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBCH PAS) and the 30th anniversary of the affiliated Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC). In its early days, the Institute was a pioneer in nucleic acid research in Poland. Today, it stands as a dynamically operating interdisciplinary research unit specializing in three interrelated areas: chemistry, biology, and informatics. The activities of IBCH PAS and PSNC contribute not only to the advancement of science but also to the development of a modern, knowledge-based economy. The 30th anniversary of the PSNC will be celebrated along with the 20th anniversary of the PIONIER Consortium from September 12th to 14th, 2023. The jubilee celebrations for the 35th anniversary of the IBCH PAS will take place on November 13th, 2023. Additionally, from November 14th to 15th, an international scientific conference entitled "Understand and Describe Life" will be held, featuring distinguished speakers from home and abroad. The conference will be organized into six sessions: "Life at the molecular level", "Life at the single-cell level", "Life at the organismal level", "Life at the population level", "Synthetic life", and "Digital and virtual life". For more information about the conference, please visit the website: https://life2023.ichb.pl/
