Dr. Katarzyna Klonowska member of the Academy of Young Scientists PAS

On June 20, 2024, the 151st Session of the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences was held, during which Dr. Katarzyna Klonowska from our Institute was elected as a new member of the Academy of Young Scientists of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

A record number of 116 candidates were submitted to this year’s elections to the Academy of Young Scientists of the Polish Academy of Sciences, from whom 16 new members were ultimately selected.

Members of the Academy of Young Scientists of the Polish Academy of Sciences stand out for their excellent research achievements and activities promoting science. The Academy of Young Scientists was established in 2010 to promote scientific research and development work conducted by young representatives of Polish science. Its aim is to encourage the community of young researchers to various activities related to science, including: presenting opinions and programs on scientific matters, organizing debates, discussions, scientific conferences and disseminating their results, as well as disseminating ethical standards among young scientists.

Katarzyna Klonowska obtained her PhD under the supervision of prof. Piotr Kozłowski at IBCH PAS in 2017. After her PhD, she completed a 5-year postdoctoral fellowship in Boston, at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in the Cancer Genetics Laboratory with Dr. David Kwiatkowski. As part of collaboration with Dr. Kwiatkowski, was/is involved in scientific projects that led to the discovery of new aspects of the genetics of tuberous sclerosis complex. Dr. Katarzyna Klonowska’s research balances on the border of genetics and medicine and has led to discoveries with practical application in the diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis complex and potential significance for patients. Currently, Dr. Katarzyna Klonowska is head the Department of Cancer Genetics, IBCH PAS, which conducts ultrasensitive analysis of mutations in tumors associated with hereditary cancer syndromes.
