“Picnic with the General” – A living history lesson in Turew

On May 24, 2025, the picturesque Palace and Park Complex in Turew became the setting for a unique journey through time. The event, titled “Picnic with the General”, was organized by the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS) to commemorate the birthday of General Dezydery Chłapowski – one of the most prominent figures in the history of organic work in Wielkopolska.

The palace came alive with a rich cultural and educational program. Numerous guests had the opportunity to explore various aspects of aristocratic and peasant life from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The event featured historical fashion shows prepared by the Poznań Fashion School, performances by the “Turewianki” senior club ensemble, and vocal and dance presentations by the” Folk Dance Ensemble “Poznań” AWF.

Visitors were particularly drawn to the historical scenes staged inside the palace, directed by Anna Łazuka-Witek and performed by the Legion Theater Association from Kórnik. On the palace courtyard, spectators enjoyed a spectacular live chess match designed by Maria Romana Gierczyńska. The program also included an engaging lecture on industrial clothing production, presented by the Museum of Clothing History from Poznań.

On the lawn in front of the palace – once a riding arena – attendees could take part in art workshops, learn to crochet, enjoy retro games, and have their photo taken in a vintage-style photo booth. A themed outdoor game in the palace park, led by animators, attracted participants of all ages. The event also included first aid demonstrations.

Delicious refreshments were provided by the local women’s association and the Parent Council of the Turew Primary School.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, especially the Municipality of Kościan for its organizational support and the Provincial Public Library and Cultural Animation Center in Poznań for making the exhibition “Women in the Traditional Culture of Greater Poland” available. “Picnic with the General” was co-financed by the Wielkopolska Region as part of the program “Organic Work – The Heritage of the People of Wielkopolska”, organized along the Trail of Organic Work – an initiative coordinated by the General Dąbrowski Palace in Winna Góra.
