As part of the agreement between the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Czech Academy of Sciences aimed at supporting scientific mobility, another meeting took place in November between researchers from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Parasitology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, as well as the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia.
The project team from IBCH PAS includes Anna Urbanowicz, PhD, DSc, Joanna Śliwiak, PhD, Martyna Kordyś, MSc, and Łukasz Przybył, PhD, while the international team consists of Ryan Rego, PhD, Martin Strnad, PhD, and Zuzanna Vavruskova, PhD.
Researchers from Poland and the Czech Republic are joining forces to conduct studies on the molecular mechanisms underlying tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and relapsing fever caused by Borrelia spirochetes.
During his visit to IBCH PAS, Dr. Martin Strnad delivered a lecture entitled “Bridging Scales: How Advanced Imaging Illuminates Borrelia Infection”, in which he presented the potential of combining advanced imaging technologies to answer key questions about the pathogenesis of Lyme disease. By integrating correlative light and electron microscopy, volumetric electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and NMR spectroscopy, Dr. Strnad and his collaborators described how Borrelia spirochetes interact with their environment on scales ranging from molecular to cellular.
