Research activity

Research area

The main goal of the Department is to develop new, effective antiviral strategies against newly emerging pathogens, e.g. influenza virus, SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV. An effective method of fighting viruses requires extended basic research on the replication cycle of viruses and the interactions between the pathogen and the host cell, hence the main research topics of the Department include:

  • virus entry mechanism, including the proteolytic processing of viral surface protein;
  • virus – host cell interactions, i.e. interactions between the viral defective interfering particles and host cell proteins;
  • molecular diagnostic of infectious diseases.
Keywords:
  • Emerging viruses
  • Transmembrane serine proteases type II
  • TMPRSS2
  • Proteolytic activation of surface viral protein ·
  • Hemagglutinin
  • Spike protein
