A team of scientists from the ICHB PAS, led by dr Pawel Zmora, in cooperation with the Aquanet Laboratory and the Department and Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Hepatology and Acquired Immunodeficiencies (DCIDHA) at Poznan University of Medical Sciences, has published work in the prestigious International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IF 12,074). The scientists demonstrated the presence of genetic material of the mpox (formerly monkeypox) virus in the sewage network of the city of Poznan, and found no correlation between presence of the pathogen and the number of hospitalized patients. The results indicate that the scale of the mpox epidemic in Poznan was significantly underestimated, and that the number of those infected with mpox virus is higher than official data would indicate.
