Funding for the project “Preparation of the V-NERVE proposal for the MSCA DN call”

We are pleased to announce that the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences (IBCH PAS) has secured funding for the project “Preparation of the V-NERVE proposal for the MSCA DN call” under the European Funds for a Smart Economy Programme, specifically the “Grants for Eurogrants” measure. The project is led by Agnieszka Fiszer, PhD, DSc, Assoc. Prof.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks (MSCA DN) 2025 is an initiative under the Horizon Europe programme, aimed at improving the quality of doctoral education through international, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral doctoral programmes. The programme supports the mobility of early-career researchers, the development of research and soft skills, and collaboration between science and industry.

The funded project involved preparing an application for the ‘HORIZON-MSCA-2025-DN-01-01’ call for proposals. As a consortium partner, the IBCH PAS was responsible for co-developing the scientific and training components of the proposal, preparing the description of the host institution and supervisors, the training programme and the budget, as well as for liaising with international partners and verifying the documentation. The Institute also drew up research plans for two PhD students, covering methodology, international collaboration and skills development. Their implementation under the V-NERVE proposal is planned at two departments of the IBCH PAS – the Department of Medical Biotechnology, headed by Agnieszka Fiszer, PhD, DSc, Assoc. Prof., and the Department of Molecular Neurooncology, headed by Katarzyna Rolle, , PhD, DSc, Assoc. Prof.

The aim of the project is to increase the internationalisation and visibility of the IBCH PAS through participation in the MSCA DN 2025 consortium and the submission of a proposal under the Horizon Europe framework programme. The MSCA DN proposal received a very high rating from the experts, confirming its high scientific quality and research potential.  Ultimately, it did not receive funding due to the limited budget available under the call.

The total value is 39,601.00 PLN, with co-financing from European Funds amounting to 39,601.00 PLN. Implementation period: 2025–2026.

The project is co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for a Smart Economy programme.

We know the winner of the 1st nationwide SPARK Poland competition

Dr. Urszula Kozlowska has become the winner of the 1st nationwide SPARK Poland competition, organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The SPARK Poland program is an intensive, two-year mentoring initiative developed at Stanford University, aimed at supporting innovative biomedical research, helping to translate research findings into clinical trials, and commercializing novel products, including new therapies. 

The goal of the SPARK project titled “Development of an affordable therapeutic candidate for Alzheimer's Disease” is to work toward the implementation of a proposed low-cost and safe drug—designed to delay the progression of dementia in Alzheimer's disease—into clinical trials, under the guidance of experienced domestic and international mentors. For this purpose, under the SPARK Poland program, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland will allocate PLN 300,000 to finance R&D and in-kind support, coordinated by the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. 

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by chronic inflammation, disruption of metabolic processes, and the accumulation of toxic proteins in the cerebral cortex. It is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly. Approximately 50 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer's disease, including about 0.5 million in Poland. It is estimated that, due to population aging, this number may triple by 2050. Currently, the only available drugs for Alzheimer’s disease are monoclonal antibodies. The annual cost of such therapy is approximately PLN 100,000, which highlights the urgent need to develop a highly effective and more affordable treatment.
