Report session on the scientific activities of the IBCH PAS in 2025

On 21–22 May, a report session was held to summarise the activities of the IBCH PAS in 2025, attended by all staff members of the Institute’s scientific division. For the second time, we had the honour of hosting members of the International Advisory Board (IAB), comprising:

• Prof. Paola B. Arimondo, The National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Paris, France

• Prof. François Chaumont, Louvain Institute of Molecular Science and Technology, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium

• Prof. Sandrine Etienne-Manneville, Institut Pasteur, Paris, France

• Prof. Janez Plavec, Slovenian NMR Centre, National Institute of Chemistry, Ljubljana, Slovenia

• Prof. Nikolaus Rajewsky, Max Delbrück Center and Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany.

To begin with, the Director of the Institute, dr hab. Luiza Handschuh,  professor IBCH PAS, presented a report on the IBCH’s  PAS activities in 2025, whilst Robert Pękal, the Director’s Representative for the PCSS, briefly summarised the PCSS’ activities over the past year.

As every year, the best scientific articles published in 2025 and outstanding doctoral theses were presented. The IBCH PAS Director’s Award for the best experimental work was presented to Piotr Kozłowski’s team for an article published in the journal Nucleic Acids Research entitled “Whole-miRNome sequencing: a panel for the targeted sequencing of all human miRNA genes”. Annasha Dutta, Anastasiia Zaremba and Paulina Jackowiak were awarded for the best review paper entitled “Ribonucleases in Mendelian disease: characterisation and insight from model organisms”, which appeared in Genes & Diseases. The award for the best doctoral thesis went to Marta Sztachera.

The oral presentation session was accompanied by a poster session featuring the research results of all Departments and Specialized Laboratories. Out of 55 entries, all Institute employees voted to select the best poster, authored by the team: Anna Karlik, Dorota Wronka, and Łukasz Przybył. The authors of the winning poster will receive funding from the Institute to attend a scientific conference of their choice.

The first day of the session was graced by a performance by the Chamber Choir of the Polish Academy of Sciences, conducted by Alicja Szeluga.

On the second day of the reporting session, members of the IAB held meetings with individual groups of staff from the research division and PhD students. Discussions focused on the problems and challenges arising in contemporary research work and the opportunities facing, above all, young researchers.

At the end of the session, a meeting was held between IAB experts and the Institute’s management, during which the reporting session was summarised. IAB members shared their positive impressions of their visit to the Institute and offered recommendations and comments following their meetings with individual staff groups.
