We are pleased to announce that Dr. Paulina Gałka-Marciniak has been awarded a scholarship under the Mieczysław Bekker Programme, launched by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). The programme enables researchers to carry out scientific research at renowned research institutions around the world. The awarded grant entitled “The role of MIR142 mutations in blood cancers” will support a research fellowship at the Beckman Research Institute, City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, United States.

Mutations in the MIR142 gene, frequently detected in blood cancers such as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), may play a key role in malignant transformation. Researchers from the IBCH PAS have shown that these mutations destabilize the structure of the miRNA precursor, alter the profile of released isoforms, and significantly reduce the production of mature miRNA molecules. However, their role in cancer cells remains largely unknown. The aim of this outgoing project is to investigate how MIR142 gene mutations occurring in lymphomas contribute to the development and progression of these cancers. The results obtained will deepen our understanding of the role of miR-142 in hematological malignancies and will constitute an important step toward the development of novel targeted therapies and cancer biomarkers.

The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange awarded funding at the maximum level, i.e. PLN 135,500.
